Details about the human side of the Canine Campus:
Who we are, and how we got here
Terry Smith, off-leash play
supervisor
A former North Vancouverite,
Canine Campus staff member Terry Smith has been a West Kelowna
resident since 1992. She first came to Canine Campus as a volunteer.
Since her own two Chihuahua/dachshund dogs had used and endorsed the
facility, Terry volunteered her own time for two months while she
was employed at a local care home.
“I’ve always had lots of animals in my life,” Terry says, “from
racoons, pigs and chickens to rodents, dogs and cats. “ Terry’s
at-home pet collection currently includes a big black cat that was
willed to her by a resident of the care home.
In May 2008, Canine Campus needed another staff person, so Terry
applied.
“Since the opening came up at Canine Campus I’ve never looked back,”
Terry says. With the other team members at Canine Campus, she can
handle and amuse from sixteen to thirty dogs at a time.
“Of course I enjoy my human friends Joann and Candy and our
numerous school volunteers,” says Terry, “but my favourite thing
about the work at Canine Campus is how many different breeds of dogs
we get, with their distinct individual personalities.”
Candy
Bolokoski, off-leash play supervisor
Originally from Calgary, Candy has lived in the Okanagan for twenty
years.
She was introduced to Canine Campus when she began bringing her own
dog for daycare while working.
“I was always happy with the daycare services, and also took some
obedience training classes at Canine Campus,” says Candy. “When my
last office job ended and there was an opening at the dog daycare,
it seemed like a good idea to apply. Dogs have always been one of my
passions.”
Candy finds the variety and hours at Canine Campus are a perfect
fit. She also loves being able to bring her own Wheaton Terrier,
Zowie, with her to work.
“ Each morning when I arrive at Canine Campus, I spend about two
hours walking the dogs along the creek. How great is that ? It’s my
favourite time of the day.”
